A couple of the greatest questions that many, if not all, have asked are, “What is my purpose? What am I supposed to be doing?” To find the answer to these questions, we will look in many different places. We may go to the library and seek out self-help books to give us clarity. Many of us go to college in the hopes that clarity and direction will come. Then there are those who will chase the wind and look for the next adventure in life, hoping that they will find purpose and direction.

If only we would look to the Author of life and the purpose of it for these answers. For example, if we were to go to Titus chapter two, we would see instructions given to us in every aspect of life. For example, older men are to be self-controlled, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance. For older women, they are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, and not to be addicted to wine. They are also to be teachers of what is good. They are to be encouragers to young women in how they are to love their husbands. The text goes on to instruct young men and even those who are in the workforce.

Then, if we were to go on to chapter three of Titus, the Apostle Paul tells us to be submissive to our rulers and authorities, to obey, and to be ready for every good work. We are not to slander anyone, avoid fighting, and we are called to be kind and to show gentleness to all people. We see that our purpose brings great responsibility. If we concentrate on the things that biblically we are called to do, everything else will fall into place. How are we able to do this? Well, we can’t, at least not in our own power. Titus 3:4-7 tells us how this is possible, “But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”

We can accomplish our purpose and our responsibilities because the Spirit of the Living God is poured out upon His people. Don’t be surprised when lost people act like a bunch of chuckleheads; that is who they are. But for the follower of Christ, we are created for much more and to be better than we used to be.

Let us grab on to the responsibility of being a follower of Jesus and watch our purpose become crystal clear.
