What Do We Really Want?

I think we could all agree that every person who walks or has walked upon the face of the earth is searching for something to satisfy their lives. Sadly, so many of us search in the wrong places. How do we know this? Because we can look around and see the very fabric of society being torn apart because man would rather look everywhere else but God for the fulfilment they are looking for.

The truth is that many really do not want what is best for them; they just want what they want but without the consequences. This is why we see so many commercials for medication to either prevent or try to heal diseases that come from sinful actions. The question that man really needs to answer is the same question Jesus gave to the lame man at the “Pool of Bethesda.” This man had been lying at this pool for a very long time, trying to make his way into the water where an angel of the Lord would stir the water and the first person in would receive healing. In John chapter five verse six, Jesus looks at this man and asks him, “Do you wish to get well?” For many of us, this seems like a silly question, but it is a very good question because not everybody really wants to get well.

For the sick and broken, healing would be great, and just about everyone would want to be healed. But very few really want to be healed from the great disease of sin that has been plaguing man since the fall in the garden; they just want the consequences to go away. When we take the time to give the gospel, this is the question we are asking, “Do you want to be healed?” Does one really want to be healed from sin and eternal life away from God, forever tormented? Surprisingly, we hear many times that people really don’t. Why? I believe people think the cure is worse than the disease, and they have no idea how spiritually disease-ridden they really are and how horrible the consequences are. 

It is interesting that when Jesus asked this question, the man thought the answer was going to be through the work of man, but Jesus gave this man what he really needed and that no other man or ritual could give.

Today, maybe you need to answer the question: Do you want to get well, or are you one who is out telling others how they could be healed spiritually? Just remember that sin is a spiritual disease and the only cure is Jesus the Christ.
