One truth the world does not want to hear is that we are all born into darkness. This past weekend I got to see Rick Springfield in concert. Now, in full transparency, not someone I would listen to very often. But I must admit, he rocked the house and I enjoyed it very much. As my wife and I were travelling back home, she read to me that there was a time when this singer-musician tried to commit suicide. In an article, Springfield spoke of hearing of other celebrities committing suicide; he said,I get it. I get being that lost and dark.”

Hearing this broke my heart. Then I began to wonder how many more have this darkness that they just can’t find a way out of, which leads to that hopelessness and the idea that death is the only answer. In my devotions, I am reminded of a very powerful verse that I would want to share with anyone who finds themselves in such a place. Colossians 1:13-14, “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

I totally understand that this sounds so simple and would probably make a lot of people scoff. But if you are a follower of Christ, you know this to be true. You can remember when there was no real joy in your life and no hope that came with dying. Then came the day Jesus entered your life and everything changed. Light broke through the darkness, and even amid the struggle, there is the hope that can only come from Jesus.

Everyone deals with the darkness of struggles and depression that this world throws at us, but Christ is the light that will drive away the attacks of the evil one that tries to suffocate us in hopelessness. This is a supernatural event that cannot be explained by intellect, but only by faith in the One who died for the sins of all mankind.

Christ broke the chains of sin and the grave that had us bound, and in this blessed hope that rescues us from the domain of darkness, He now puts us forever in the kingdom of God. So, when life seems to be crashing around you and darkness is trying to take control of your life, call on the name of Jesus. He is still in the business of rescuing all who would call upon Him.
